What if my dog doesn't know how to paw?

Bridging the Gap: Pretty's Journey to Embrace the Communication Buttons

Greetings, fellow dog enthusiasts! Today, we're diving deeper into the ongoing adventure of Pretty, our lovely 5-year-old British Springer Spaniel, as she embarks on a fascinating journey towards linguistic prowess. Pretty has always had her own unique way of communicating, a method we lovingly refer to as "Katcheek".

The Magic of Katcheek

Katcheek is the delightful sound that Pretty's claws make as she paws at various surfaces to express herself. Over time, we've managed to categorize this fascinating language into different segments, allowing us to understand Pretty's desires more precisely. Here’s a glimpse of the unique Katcheek categories we've identified:

  1. Katcheek-Eat: Pretty uses this to signal that she is hungry and is in the mood for some treats or her meal.

  2. Katcheek-Out: This is Pretty's way of requesting a trip to the garden, a gesture characterized by her pawing at the door.

  3. Katcheek-Pet: This is a sweet call for affection, a time when Pretty is craving some cuddles and pets.

And now, we find ourselves at the cusp of introducing a new category, one that promises to be a milestone in Pretty's verbal adventure:

  1. Katcheek-Buttons: This new category has been introduced to help Pretty transition into using a button system, a leap that would enable her to communicate with us in a more sophisticated manner.

The Button Communication System

The button system, inspired by the groundbreaking research carried out at Yale University with Bunny the talking sheepdog, involves an assembly of buttons, each associated with a recorded word that plays back upon being pressed. It serves as a revolutionary tool to foster deeper communication between humans and their furry companions.

In Pretty's case, we have started with a manageable setup of four buttons, each playing back words that denote actions she is already familiar with. One of the buttons, for instance, is programmed with the command to fetch the journal, an activity Pretty associates well with.

The Anticipation and the Hesitation

Interestingly, Pretty shows a profound understanding of the words being played back through the buttons. She perfectly associates the actions corresponding to the words, preparing herself to carry them out, just as she would if we were voicing the commands ourselves.

However, Pretty finds herself at a crossroad of intrigue and hesitation. Despite understanding the potential of the button system, she has showcased a persistent attitude of disdain towards interacting with the buttons directly. Our beloved Pretty seems to find the very idea of pressing the buttons a bit vulgar and beneath her, preferring her own Katcheek language instead.

To bridge this gap, we introduced the concept of Katcheek-Buttons. Even at the mere mention of this term, we can observe Pretty's mind buzzing with plans and strategies, as she navigates the complexities of this new form of communication.

Looking Ahead: Nurturing a Talking Dog

As we forge ahead, our focus is to ensure Pretty doesn't find the button system intimidating. We aim to cultivate an environment where she can naturally transition from Katcheek to pushing buttons without fear or apprehension.

With patience, love, and consistent efforts, we hope to see Pretty taking the bold step of embracing the button system, thus marking a significant milestone in her journey of becoming a talking dog.

Stay tuned to witness Pretty's gradual transition from Katcheek to a seamless interaction with the communication buttons. Together, let's celebrate each small victory and be a part of Pretty's remarkable journey on her road to verbal communication, exclusively here on Casual Dog Communic8.
